8.50 (very good) Like many animes before(& after) it, this series chooses to stop at an early arc, meaning that we only get to see the absolute tip of the story, almost without any of the adventures, encounters, plot twists, interesting reveals & character development that came to follow, & let's face it, these are the parts that made the story into something really worth following, no?
That doesn't mean I didn't like the show, I did. It has consistently good animation, good acting, & a nicely done soundtrack. But I did have grievances here & there, like the tendency to omit or change important details(those chains are special army shackles that can only be removed by the party that had put them there, & Teito's wish was to see the Father, not Mikage, & even when the Kor are not allowed to grant a wish that puts the living together with the dead that one almost did grant it, & that's why it was so dangerous.. and seriously, most people would comment on the presence of a casket within a bedroom, let alone on having someone sleeping inside it..). It was also rather painful & tiresome to watch Teito running around in circles for so long, especially when most of these circles revolved around Mikage in one way or the other, which rather belittled the scale of the source story, & gave many of the audience an interesting take on the anime's genre..
So basically, this series sets the stage for the real 07-Ghost story that follows in the manga. For some, it might be exactly what they would like to see, for others, it might be somewhat less than so. As for those who would start a Teito-bashing storm, give the boy a break; like Ayumu Narumi of Spiral fame, he has shining moments that come in spades, but that's after the anime's end, & unfortunate as this may seem, it is how things usually go.

9.50 (excellent) I realize I've given the anime a rather high rating, but I'm really impressed with the way the filler episodes were handled. Unlike oh-so-many anime series, here we get reasonably distributed fillers that help establish the characters, & build up for the main arcs in the story, & so the series doesn't drink up all the available story in the source material until it's left running on a dry engine which keeps coughing up one filler arc after the other, when the only thing the audience want to see at that stage is real progress from the real story..
Other than that, I also like the characterization, & how the anime manages to actually enhance the manga, which I also happen to like a lot, the music fits nicely into the story, & I find the pianist/musician song quite adorable.. I only hope that sometime in the near future there would be more of the good thing & some new episodes will find their way into production now that there is more material to use..

Fullmetal Alchemist

10.00 (excellent) Well, this is one of my all-time favourites in terms of story, characters, & narrative, most likely then this won't be much of an objective review, but it's not like there is much of that running around anyway...
So, I have seen Fullmetal Alchemist the Anime Series some years ago, liked it a whole lot & didn't mind watching it again & again. I enjoyed the emotional intensity of the coming of age story through all the action-adventuring & side quests, and the resulting big picture. This fact however has in no way influenced me into not accepting the awesomeness that is the FMA manga, nor has it stopped me from rejoicing at the announcement of the production of a new series that follows that then nearly-ended manga.
Now I've been watching Brotherhood & I absolutely love it, regardless of the few tweaks here & there. I very much like the animation boost, & the action flow throughout the series. There are some new voice actors on board, & a few new roles for some of the original ones, but since it's done so well I have no objection whatsoever. Also, there is an independent narrator this time around, giving the series a sense of grand epic which differs greatly from that of a personal journey which was instigated by Alphonse's narrative in the first anime series. And this time around, there's hardly any sidetracking or deviation from the main story, making the 64-episode series feel so much shorter..
All in all, I would give the series a full mark rating, but on the account of some minor details... on a second thought, since I love the manga so much I'm changing the rating from 9.75 to a full 10. Thanks ever so much Hiromu Arakawa, you're the best!

GUILTY CROWN

Last Updated: Aug 02, 2012

8.75 (very good) It is true; Guilty Crown does have some rather obvious similarities to a couple or so stories, not all of which are as well-known or as recent as Code Geass, but having seen & read no less than a couple of thousand anime, novels, manga, plays, TV series & movies, I am well aware that there aren't that many stories left untold, & that stories, all stories, are essentially the same. That, however, doesn't necessarily make them into 'cheap, bad imitation' stories.
So yes, I am enjoying Guilty Crown. The gorgeous presentation, setting, & style have definitely won me over, and I like the beautiful art & character design, the wonderful music, & the fluid rhythm of the story. Production I.G has taken a gamble & won by handing the project to young & not-so-mainstream anime-fan artists, resulting in a series with a visually & vocally engaging storytelling, even if it can be rather predictable at times, it still manages to keep its fantastic charm & style at top notch.
So, everything that makes me whole ima kimi ni sasageyou. I'm Yours.

Hunter x Hunter

8.25 (good) Frankly speaking, I like Hunter x Hunter's anime far better than that of Naruto. Sure it does drag at times, but in its absolute worse it doesn't reach the Narutian level(or the Bleachian, or that of most other NO-I-Am-A-Bigger-Ham-Determinater-Than-Everyone-&-Let-Us-Drag-On-That kind of shounen shows, if that matters).. but to be clear, I only mentioned Naruto because the two series started airing about the same time, & while Naruto does slow down considerably on occasions, it never shows any sign of stopping, unlike how HxH managed to stop rather than use a whole lot of filler arcs until the manga catches up.. then of course the mangaka decided to sleep on the story, so...
Now, however, following the rather common trend of new old-anime for the new generation, we have a new somewhat compressed Hunter x Hunter series which I'm following right now, with all-new animation, voice actors, studio & eye colours. And regardless of my general dislike of the "they did it why don't we" system, I cannot complain when it comes to anime(not quite often, at least); after all who wouldn't want more of a good thing? As for the HxH 2011, it seems rather good so far, but it's too early to form a definite opinion. I guess I'll keep watching while hoping that Yoshihiro Togashi would, if he pleases, keep the chapters coming.. so until the HxH 2012 episodes are safely aired, I'm keeping my fingers crossed..

Kobato

8.25 (good) Well, what can I say? I enjoy CLAMP's work in general, & I like how this story was managed into an anime. Sure, I do have a few objections here & there, the biggest of which is that...song Kobato kept hammering into our skulls so relentlessly(at least at no given time it was stated that she sings like an angel, as in the manga), & I do miss those subtle hints implying that Ioryogi-san could have something to do with Kobato's seemingly endless wardrobe without her having a wardrobe to begin with(that cellphone conjuring trick was neat), & so on. I do like the fun & the humor however, the good pace of the narrative, the CLAMP crossover element(Touya, Kohaku, Legal Drug, xxxholic, & such), & the TRC gang showing up post TRC was rather cool, along with the many CLAMP points borrowed from other CLAMP stories to wrap up the anime convincingly..

Mobile Suit Gundam 00

8.75 (very good) So, I realize there are enough plot holes for a mother ship to fit in rather snugly, but having enjoyed the series so much, I don't really care. And, unlike the previous Gundam outing, this time around even the annoying characters do have a real function within the story that consists of something more than screeching at the screen in the most grating ways possible, while randomly piloting some additional action figure franchise...
Gundam 00 has successfully restored my faith in the series, & I think perhaps a good number of the series fans agree with me on this one..

Pandora Hearts

9.00 (very good) So yeah, I do have quite a few grievances with the amount of detail & attention that was Not put into the anime series, & those last three episodes most definitely have NEVER existed, yet I'd give the series a high rating without a moment's hesitation; it is Pandora Hearts after all.. & if the story isn't amazing enough we have a fantastic soundtrack courtesy of Yuki Kajiura, so it's only natural that I'd be wanting for not much more than that.. supposedly, that is.
This 'not much' is simply more PH episodes. The story covered in the series was only an introduction to the world of PH & some of its characters. While the directions it has been taking after that only Jun Mochizuki can answer for, so it's worth while to go through the trouble of producing new episodes for the series, & unlike those three none-existent harebrained episodes, these new ones would be worth every dime put into them & then some.
Some parties better be working out a deal so that the we-know-anime-what-is-'mango' majority won't be missing out on the best of PH.

Princess Tutu

Last Updated: May 09, 2012

9.75 (excellent) Usually I steer clear from the anime or manga that has the tiny body-balloon head sort of character design, since the rather chibie-like proportions kind of keep getting in the way of the intensity of the drama.. but here you have it; I'm painfully aware that there are some great stories that have, for one reason or another, chosen to have such character designs, & that if I was adamant about sticking to my sort-of policy I'd end up missing on some wonderful stories, such as Princess Tutu...
Well then, the crazy awesome mix of classical musical pieces, accurate ballet dances, gruesome fairy tales, stories within the stories, loops, ancient conspiracies, swan lake tendencies, hollow princes, knight writers, sadistic story tellers, puppets, crows, ducks, & ..er ..guitar ninjas(...) is just that; crazy awesome. Now, whenever I hear Satie's Gymnopedie No. 1, some part of Scheherazade or Swan Lake, Dance of the Sugarplum Fairies or anything from the Nutcracker, I get a strong craving for watching this series again. Now that's a very good motivation for buying DVDs, no?

Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle

8.75 (very good) What can I say here, really? This is one of those truly sad stories anime & manga fans would occasionally run into; where they cannot but wonder about the secret kind of magic applied by some anime series so as to transform an engagingly dynamic manga story into little more than a rapid sequence of bland stills. The music was fantastic though, which is more than many other slide-show anime series can claim to themselves.
Luckily, the OAD's are a whole different story(...), since they try a little harder to be in sync with the source material in the spirit & the character designs, while maintaining the fantastic music. Their insistence however on animating only the arcs that happen to include a couple of Syaorans kicking the hell out of each other & totally ignoring the arcs in-between is something to wonder about, even though it is rather understandable. Still, it is a shame we won't get to see those arcs in animation.
In any case, while this is one of the prime examples of why this portal should be called 'Anime & MANGA Watchlist', TRC animation(I am NOT acknowledging the title 'Tsubasa Chronicle') receives a rather good rating due to the fabulous music, the fine acting, & the cool OAD's. And so once again Yuki Kajiura saves the day.

Witch Hunter Robin

Last Updated: Apr 10, 2011

8.25 (good) This Sunrise anime is about witches, aka mutants, as in X-Men mutants, but without the customs, & the tails & the blue skins aren't an option here. So, it's about these witches & the organization that hunts them down, & watching it I couldn't help but wonder wither it's just me or have others likened some of the characters here to character types seen in the TV series 'La Famme Nikita'...
Of course I'm referring to the characters in the original TV drama, not the French movie 'Nikita', or the American remake of the same name, nor the new TV series, also titled 'Nikita', that is based on the 'La Famme Nikita' series... but this is not the subject here...
In any case, this is a good show, & even though there are many character backgrounds & in-universe details that i would like to know more about, I did enjoy it enough to make me mark it on my watchlist & write something here about it, so there.
